Making Yarn Ornaments

We needed an easy ornament to make for our Girl Scout Troop, which would hold up in the outdoors, to decorate the Christmas tree in the Girl Scout Tree Grove. We loved the result so much we have made it every year since, using different wood shapes, and making an extra one to keep for our own trees.

Supplies

  • Wood shapes
  • Ribbon
  • Yarn, assorted colors
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Directions

I would suggest starting with a basic shape such as an ornament (circle) or mitten or star since you will be cutting off the excess yarn to the shape, and the more intricate, the harder it will be to cut (not to mention tell what the shape is!).

  1. Tape a small piece of ribbon to the wood piece. This is so you can hang the ornament on the tree.
  2. Cut the yarn into small strips, slightly longer than the width of the shape you will be using.
  3. Put glue on one side of the wood shape, and then lay the yarn down in pattern desired, piece by piece, until you have completed the side.
  4. Turn the ornament over (placing on wax paper will help with the potential glue mess) and repeat the process on this side.
  5. Let the glue dry, then cut the excess yarn off around the shape.
  6. You can add a bow on the top if desired.
